Hailey and Raven, a beautiful pair of red dachshunds, were surrendered to Southern California Dachshund Rescue because their previous owner is in the final stage of her battle with cancer. She needed to be sure that when she passed, her beloved girls were safe and going to a loving home.
While Hailey and Raven's previous owner was in and out of the hospital, her babies were left alone to fend for themselves for weeks at a time, with only a daily visit from a family member who dropped by to feed them. Over the last year, they've become emotionally shut down and in need of veterinary attention.
Hailey only needed current vaccinations, but Raven was in worse shape. Our vet spayed and vaccinated her, treated her for a nasty eye infection and repaired a hernia. Both girls are now in fine shape.
For the first several days after coming into rescue, Hailey and Raven were so terrified that they hid in their crate all day, only coming out to go potty. Once they realized they were loved and safe, they began to relax, and their foster mom was able to interest them in life outside the crate.
After their foster mom taught them how to walk on a leash, Stephanie of Doggie Adventures in Los Altos added them to her pro-bono excursion list. So far, Raven and Hailey have been to the beach, which they liked, and to the hills, which they LOVED, probably because they got to sniff around a wonderfully smelly horse stable and rest in the landowner's lap. They are much more outgoing now that they know there are so many adventures to enjoy. They would really love to continue exploring their world after they find their new home.
Hailey is Raven's mother, but the two girls act like sisters or best friends, cuddling together all the time and looking out for one another. Hailey is the brave one and spends a lot of time mothering Raven. They are both friendly, affectionate, loving little ladies who enjoy being pet and held.
Although they're only eight and five years old respectively, Hailey and Raven have prematurely white faces, which often happens with the little red girls. They're both gorgeous, but Hailey has an extra-special attribute: her brown eyes are rimmed with blue. She's very striking!
Hailey and Raven weren't taken outside to potty during the last year at their former home, so they forgot their manners. Their foster mom has them 90% housetrained again, but their adopters will need to give them a refresher course in their new home. They are crate trained, and they know how to use the dog door.
If you're looking for someone special to share your life, please consider adopting Hailey and Raven. They would be perfect for a quiet family or a retired person/couple with or without visiting grandkids. Given their history, we don't want to place these girls in a home where they will be home most of the day, so a retired or work-at-home person would be best. We don't know if they're good with cats, but they get along well with other dogs.
These ladies are currently being fostered in the San Francisco Bay Area, but transportation to other parts of California is readily available if needed. The tax-deductible donation for both ladies is $400. They must be adopted together. We will not seperate them.

Great article and great work on everyone's part! I love that they're on the "pro bono excursions" list! :)
