Earlier today, anime publisher Sentai Filmworks revealed that it has acquired the slice-of-life, volleyball themed anime series, “Haikyuu!!”, for release in North America.

“Haikyuu!!” is based on the shonen manga series written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate, the anime is produced by Production I.G. (Ghost Hound). The series is directed by Susumu Mitsunaka (Bunny Drop), and features series composition by Taku Kishimoto (Silver Spoon) and character designs from Takahiro Kishida (Puella Magi Madoka Magica). “Haikyuu!!” is scheduled to debut in Japan in April 2014.

The series follows Shoyo Hinata, a small stature guy with dreams of becoming an established volleyball player. Having only played the game slightly in junior high, where his team was crushed by an up-and-coming star named Tobio Kageyama, Shoyo gets his chance to play again when he enters his first year of high school. Too bad for Shoyo that Tobio is attending the same school, but maybe a little friendly competition is just what both boys need to step up their game.

“Haikyuu!!” will be available through select digital outlets soon and Sentai Filmworks has plans for a home video release as well. No details about the home release have been given at this time.
