Hagg Lake Closed in Search for Additional Drowning Victims

Today at 10:00 a.m. a search for family members of a drowning victim at Hagg Lake will continue. At approximately 6:09 p.m. sheriff's deputies were called to Hagg Lake where a small child had been found unresponsive in the water. The child was pulled from the water by onlookers near the Sain Creek Picnic area where they attempted CPR until members of the Gaston Fire Department arrived on scene.

The child was pronounced deceased on scene and sheriff's deputies were unable to immediately locate the parents or anyone affiliated with their party. Nearby a beach towel, cooler, shoes, and other personal belongings were found as well as a car in the parking lot that was registered to the owner of said personal items. With no witnesses and no one claiming the victim officers were lead to investigate the potential of other drowning victims i the area.

A statement released today read, "The Newberg Fire Department Dive Team responded to assist the Washington County Sheriff's Marine Patrol search the water for any evidence or possible victims. Sheriff's Office Detectives responded to assist with the investigation. The search was suspended at 10:30 p.m. last night and will resume at about 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Hagg Lake will be completely closed on Tuesday to allow searchers and investigators uninterrupted access to the lake and surrounding area.

The Washington County Medical Examiner responded and reported no obvious signs of trauma associated with the deceased child. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death."
