Andrew Vye of ASM sports confirmed to ESPN late Wednesday night that Southern California point guard, Daniel Hackett, would be declaring for the NBA draft and, thereby, ending his tenure with the Trojans.
The junior guard finished the season strong with fellow junior Taj Gibson and freshman phenom DeMar DeRozan. The three Southern California stars came up big for the Trojans down the stretch, leading their team to victory in the Pac-10 Tournament as well as a first round upset of the Boston College Eagles in the NCAA Tournament.
Hackett’s game grew considerably during his time at USC, averaging 12.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, and 4.7 apg in his junior season. With a 6’5”, 205 lb frame, Hackett has great size for a point guard and might be used as a combo guard at the next level.
While the odds may be stacked against him, Hackett could find himself drafted in the second round of the NBA draft if he puts together a few good workouts. Whether at individual team workouts or NBA draft camps, Hackett has the ability to impress with both his size and talent.
Another option for Hackett would be to play basketball overseas. Hackett holds dual citizenship (Italy as well as the United States) and has ties to the Italian national team, for whom he played a year ago. Hackett’s Italian citizenship increases possibilities of obtaining a roster spot in the Italian league because he would not be taking a roster spot designated for foreigners.
After being treated to an impressive junior campaign as well as watching him blossom the last few years, USC fans will be sad to see Hackett move on to the next level. Nonetheless, the Trojan Nation wishes Daniel Hackett nothing but the best in the next stage of his career.
