About two dozen outdoor dogs in the Kansas City community will get a special gift on Valentine's Day: a new dog house.
A group of local volunteers is building dog houses for people and programs needing the structures for outdoor dogs. Staff members from Heartland SPCA and volunteers with KC Pet Project have joined forces to form Habitat for Paws. Their goal is to provide houses to as many outdoor dogs as possible.
“The demand for outdoor dog housing has really spiked,” said Kristin Sampson, manager of Heartland SPCA's Humane Education Resource Officer (HERO) program. “This will make a big difference in the lives of dogs in our community living outside and seeking protection from inclement weather.”
From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, Habitat for Paws volunteers will hold a “build-a-thon" at the Heartland SPCA Medical Center (5428 Antioch Drive, Merriam). They plan to build more than 25 dog houses during the event. Habitat for Paws will deliver the completed houses next Tuesday.
In-kind donations of insulation board, plywood, peel-and-stick roofing rolls, caulk, nails and other building supplies are needed to produce the dog houses. Monetary support is also appreciated so that Habitat for Paws can provide the dog houses for free—including delivery—to residents in need. You can donate funds through the Habitat for Paws ChipIn site; you can also take monetary or in-kind donations to the Heartland SPCA Animal Medical Center. In addition, any person or organization needing a dog house is welcome to submit a request at this time.
