H&R Block vs Turbotax

In retaliation for the Turbo tax commercials that poke fun at other tax preparation outfits that hire any and anyone to prepare taxes and that more people use Turbotax than Block and their competitors combined, Block sets out to even the score by offering their second look program not just to anyone who self prepared their return using just anybody’s program but specifically Turbotax. I am pleased that the commercial does include the fact that there are fees to prepare an amended return.
Here are some of the small print takeaways:

“Not all do it yourself filers make errors, and not every error results in a larger refund.” Pardon my opinion, but if it were me, I would want to know the point of the taking on the second look challenge in the first place. No one wants to waste time chasing a larger refund that may or may not exist.
“Turbo tax has tax advisors, but they don’t prepare and sign entire tax returns”. This statement is meant that tax advice and tax preparation are not in the same category. The paid preparer of the return will be held to a higher standard than the advisor because the return is his creation and handiwork.
