Every first Saturday of the month, art enthusiasts flock to 548 9th Street near Lawrence Ave in the Heights to browse the works of dozens of talented local artists at the First Saturday Art Market. This Saturday, the market was popular as ever filled with booths of painters, sculptors, photographers and more, and entertained during the day including sons by Jimmy Lee Dean and Elizabeth Jones at the sidewalk entry.
But this artistic neighborhood features many other cultural opportunities as well. Only 1 block from the First Saturday Market, at 617 W. 19th the Heights Gallery for Contemporary Art also known as H Gallery, opened a fascinating exhibit by Mexican Artist Alenjandra Santana called “Feelings and Words. Ms. Santana was born in Mexico in 1960, and started studying painting in 2002 in various workshops. She completed a Masters in sculpting and painting at La Esmeralda Escuela Nacional de Pintura in Mexico City She is currently studying with Master Artist Jaime Tellez.
The opening day also featured music by the relatively new drum and acoustic guitar duo Jam Retreevers. The Jam Retreevers performs frequently at the H Gallery and other venues in the Heights. See video of Jam Retreevers performing “Farmington Edge”
Nearly 2 dozen of Ms. Santana's works will be on display at the H Gallery for the next month. The artist was not able to attend the opening day, but will be returning to Houston in the near future. Contact the H Gallery for further details.
