Piccolo Spoleto is right on our front porches for its 33rd year in Charleston, SC. One of the attractions this year caters everyone’s apocalyptic cravings. David Poynor’s H. Apocalyptus takes place in the not-too-distant future where zombie hordes rule the lands. Three survivors, Jed, Lenora-Fontaine, and Kira, find themselves in an abandoned bar on an island off from Key West. Together, they must endure not only the treacherous world outside, but each other. Poynor draws from many pop culture mythologies about the walking dead, bringing his own spin of survival to the stage.
There’s no doubt that zombies will find themselves onto the stage every once and a while, but unlike so many zombie movies out there, the undead will not take center stage. Like Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, H. Apocalyptus focuses more on humanity, or what’s left of it. Poynor takes it a step further and narrows the attention to just the three survivors and how they interact with each other. H. Apocalyptus serves as a dark comedy and a psychological thriller which questions a lot of what we believe in now.
H. Apocalyptus will be presented by NYC’s The Salvage Company at Footlight Players Theatre on 20 Queen Street. Parental discretion is advised due to content, language, and subject matter. Tickets are $19/Adults and $15/Students and Seniors.
