Gyre Sage is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards spoiled today Jan. 10, 2013 from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert expansion set "Gatecrash." Revealed in the article "Get Big" by Mike Flores on MagicTheGathering.com, Gyre Sage can help green mages with an explosion of mana and power.
Gyre Sage - 1G
Creature - Elf Druid (Rare)
Evolve (Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, if that creature has greater power or toughness than this creature, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.)
Tap: Add G to your mana pool for each +1/+1 counter on Gyre Sage.
1/2
Flores compares Gyre Sage to Quirion Dryad. Both cost two mana, and have the potential to grow to enormous sizes. Except Gyre Sage can help ramp up your deck into larger spells. Not right away though. Gyre Sage won't be able to produce a healthy amount of extra mana until you've played a few other creatures first.
Gyre Sage will no doubt see heavy play in Evolve decks, where it can help grow Cloudfin Raptor, Experiment One, and Elusive Krasis larger.
Because Gyre Sage is a creature, it may be a fine addition to decks attempting to exploit Domri Rade compared to spells like Farseek.
Gyre Sage can gain additional counters from Gavony Township, and great white creatures like Loxodon Smiter or Restoration Angel.
Gyre Sage might make a fine addition to Brian Kibler's black-green aggro deck alongside Corpsejack Menace. The deck plays numerous creatures that deal with +1/+1 counters. From Predator Ooze and Lotleth Troll to Scavenge creatures like Dreg Mangler and Deadbridge Goliath
Once Grye Sage has reached a substantial size, you'll either be able to attack or play a massive Entreat the Angels, Bonfire of the Damned, or Sphinx's Revelation. That's provided your opponent doesn't have a Frontline Medic on their side of the battlefield.
How will you use Gyre Sage?
