Feeling virtuous because you're sipping juice instead of eating a Twinkie? Sorry, but you might as well enjoy that Twinkie, according to Gwyneth Paltrow's fitness trainer who compares juice cleanses to those sugary treats, reported the Sydney Morning Herald on Dec. 7.
"If you're going to drink a non-organic green juice, you might as well eat a Twinkie. Or a half a Twinkie, at least," scoffed celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, who also trains Madonna.
"There's like 80 calories in it, there's a bunch of chemicals in it, what's the point? The only benefit (to juice) is that it's pre-digested and the Twinkie's not," contended Tracy.
The fitness guru also believes that juice detox diets ruin the metabolism.
"They're horrific for people's health. They crash people's metabolic rate. Now, the FDA says they have to be pasteurized. So, you're drinking, basically, water that's going to give you Type 2 diabetes, potentially," said Tracy, who has written her own diet book that includes a fitness DVD: "Tracy Anderson's 30-Day Method: The Weight-Loss Kick-Start that Makes Perfection Possible" (click for details.)
As for the health value of the fruits and vegetables contained in the juice? Tracy's not impressed.
"People who are extremists are dangerous - if you're an extremist, and it works for you, fine. (But) trying to influence other people using vanity to become extreme for no reason is cultish," said Tracy.
In addition to personal training, Tracy has created a series of fitness DVDs for those who want Gwyneth-style bodies (click the links below for details):
