The International League office announced on Monday that Gwinnett Braves first baseman Ernesto Mejia was the Batter of the Week for the opening week of the season. It is the second time in his career that Mejia has earned the honor, the first being on May 20, 2012-which was also the last time a G-Braves player won the award.
Gwinnett went on the road to face the defending IL Champion Durham Bulls to open the 2014 campaign, and Mejia had an impressive series that included the 28-year old hitting .308 with four home runs, seven runs-batted-in, and 16 total bases in the four-game set.
Mejia went yard in his first at-bat of the season in Thursday’s game, and then hit his second HR in his first AB of Friday’s contest. The big first baseman became the G-Braves all-time home run leader (55) with his second of the night on Friday.
Gwinnett is set to wrap up the road trip on Thursday when they face the Norfolk Tides in the final game of a scheduled four-game series and will then return to Gwinnett for the home opener against Durham at Coolray Field on Friday night. First-pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
