NC Democratic Party Executive Committee Elected officers for 2011-12 biennium
Gwen Wilkins, Chair of the 1st Congressional District for the Democrats, was elected 1st Vice Chair of the State Executive Committee in another election at the meeting where David Parker was elected Party Chairman. Wilkins is a leader in Nash County politics and has held numerous offices in her local Democratic Party and PTA.
Stella Adams, formerly of Durham, ran for re-election for 1st Vice-Chair, but dropped out of the race after losing in the early balloting, Adams then threw her support to Wilkins. June Mabry later dropped out and conceded the race to Wilkins.
Melvin Williams was elected Secretary, and Tony McEwen was re-elected 3rd Vice-Chair.
Tony McEwen was President of the Young Democrats of North Carolina (2005-'07), and most recently served in western NC as 10th Congressional District Chairman, the youngest ever to be elected to such a position in the history of the state.
The Party Treasurer for 2011-2012 will be announced later. The Treasurer is appointed.
As reported in an earlier article David Parker of Iredell County easily defeated two opponents for election as Party Chairman.The election of Parker for Chairman was a decisive one with delegates casting a 15% margin of votes for Parker.
Chris Telesca of Raleigh said, “Parker got an enthusiastic response from the crowd. The delegates wanted somebody who knew how the Party works and Parker had done everything and that is what people wanted this time around.”
The SEC Executive Council will appoint a new person to replace David Parker in his position on the Democratic National Committee—an interim DNC representative will hold the seat temporarily.
About 15 people are running for that DNC seat. The Executive Council will meet between now and Feb. and appoint an interim DNC delegate who will serve until the summer SEC meeting in July or August.
