Contrary to popular belief, those zany characters in Gwar have a human element to them. And both sides are likely to be on display when the shock growlers make their return to San Antonio.
Gwar announced Tuesday that the kickoff to the second leg of their Return of the World Maggot tour will take place Friday, April 13, at Backstage Live with Kylesa, Ghoul and Legacy of Disorder. Ticket information is TBA. The show will mark Gwar's first appearance in San Antonio since June 7, 2010, at the White Rabbit, which was part of its 25th anniversary tour.
Complete tour dates can be found here.
The first leg of Gwar's tour kicks off March 16 in the group's hometown of Richmond, Va. (at least, their hometown on Earth). The show will serve as a benefit to guitarist Cory Smoot (aka Flattus Maximus), who was found dead on the band's tour bus Nov. 3. He was 34. Smoot died from coronary artery thrombosis brought about by pre-existing coronary artery disease.
Lead singer Dave "Oderus Urungus" Brockie, a former interplanetary correspondent for Fox News' "Red Eye" program, recently released a statement about the benefit show:
"All the years of doing Gwar could never have prepared us for what we have been through, and I want to thank the metal community and the extended Gwar family for all of your support. Finishing that last tour was the hardest thing we have ever had to do, and we still have about half of the country left to hit. We will continue as a four-piece, with the special tribute to Flattus at the end of the show, in order to give our fans a chance to say goodbye to our fallen Scumdog brother in true Gwar fashion -- covered in blood and rocking the f**k out! After this tour is over, we can start looking to the future and begin to put this tragedy behind us. But for now, we are still in “Hail Flattus” mode!"
Gwar's concerts feature the band in large, rubber costumes spouting blood to the crowd and the beheading of celebrity likenesses ranging from political figures to musicians of various genres.
This San Antonio show figures to be no different in that regard. The difference is that, through all the craziness, Gwar will be playing with heavy hearts.
