Guys Read is meeting at the Barnes and Noble in Colorado Springs

Do you have a boy at home who doesn’t like to read? If he is between the ages of 6 and 12, you might want to check out the Guys Read Book Group at Barnes and Noble (795 Citadel Drive East). They meet monthly, and you can go to this month’s meeting on Friday, February 19, at 6:30 pm. We are quite lucky to have a Guys Read group already set up in Colorado Springs, so if you have a son in the recommended age group, even if he really does like to read, introduce him to this unique group.

Guys Read is a nationwide group that was started by Jon Scieszka, the author of The Stinky Cheese Man, The Time Warp Trio Series, and many more. His books are weird and different and definitely funny, so they are perfect for boys who find books boring. Mr. Scieszka believes that we can help boys enjoy reading more if we:

  • Include nonfiction, graphic novels, magazines, online text and humorous books within the definition of ‘reading,’
  • Encourage boys to recommend their favorite books or other things to read to other boys
  • Allow them to choose the materials they read
  • Provide male role models who encourage and promote reading

The Guys Read program incorporates all these ideas. If you want to find out more, check out Jon Scieszka’s Guys Read website. From the website, you can print off some book marks and book plates, or even order a shirt, cap or skateboard with the Guys Read logo. The Guys Read program is not limited to boys in the 6 to 12 age group, so if you know some younger boys or even older boys who would enjoy this group, Mr. Scieszka has guidelines so you can start your own Guys Read group in your home or library branch.
