The second-most-famous groundhog in Pennsylvania will be joining approximately 500,000 unemployed Pennsylvanians, as Gus the Groundhog has been fired by the Pennsylvania Lottery.
On Tuesday, February 21, word spread quickly after state marketing officials decided to terminate, or perhaps exterminate, Gus as the lottery spokesrodent.
Gus began as the PA lottery spokesrodent in March 2004 and has been featured in over 59 commercials. After 8 years Gus the Groundhog will make his last appearance on March 1, 2012.
Controversy has surrounded Gus from the beginning of his career at the lottery. Rumors surfaced that Gus was used to make the lottery attractive to children, but a long-standing rivalry with Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, may have been the root of such claims.
According to lottery officials, Gus’ image will remain on the PA lottery website for a short period and then, Gus will be gone. But, we will always have YouTube to comfort those of us who will miss him.
