On Saturday, anime publisher Aniplex of America announced that the comedy/action/mecha anime series “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann” would be joining the Cartoon Network’s Toonami Saturday night lineup next month.

“Gurren Lagann” is a hugely popular anime TV series, and it has even spawned two full-length films, “Childhood’s End” and “The Lights in the Sky Are Stars” as well as manga, a video game, and light novels. The anime was originally released on subtitled home video from Bandai Entertainment in 2008, but the license was picked up by Aniplex of America and the series was released once again last year, this time with the English dub, featuring the voices of Yuri Lowenthal (Simon), Kyle Hebert (Kamina) and Michelle Ruff (Yoko). Aniplex of America also recently released both of the “Gurren Lagann” movies in a double feature Blu-ray set.

The series follows Simon, a young man who lives in an underground village along with his friend Kamina. Humanity has been underground for hundreds of years, but the two find themselves reaching for the surface, when the ceiling of their village caves in and the beautiful Yoko falls into their lives. The three of them work together, and using the “Lagann”, a mecha that Simon digs up, they head for the surface world, where new threats await them.

Anime fans can look for “Gurren Lagann” to join Adult Swim’s Toonami lineup beginning on August 16, 2014 at 2:00am EST. It looks like Toonami’s anime night, just got a little better.
