Thrill the World set a world record for the most dancers dancing to the Michael Jackson horror tribute “Thriller” on October 24, 2009. Six Flags Great America Gurnee in the Chicago area, was one of over 400 official locations around the world that held the synchronized event. Mrs. Illinois Anji Meidel, was on stage in Hometown Square to teach dance moves to Michael Jackson's Thriller and to lead the official record setting event. Ghoulish Thrill the World fit in perfectly ith the Halloween celebration of Fright Fest at Six Flags.
Hometown Square at Six Flags filled with dancers on Saturday night. Mrs. Illinois Anji Meidel led a practice session that started at 5:00 PM. The practice session started with about 100 dancers, but by the time the official dance took place at 7:30 PM Central Time there were over 600 registered dancers filling Hometown Square. Mrs. Meidel, dressed as a zombie, led the official dance that will go down in the record books.
The announcer invited several dancers onto the stage to help lead Thriller, while the majority of the dancers flooded the ground of Hometown Square. Dark had fallen, but Hometown Square was illuminated with floodlights.
The mood was positive, as the dancers appeared to be in the event for the fun and excitement. After about two hours of practice, the crowd was charged up and ready to go when the official countdown arrived.
There were some costumed characters, but most of the participants wore street clothes and hooded sweatshirts to ward off the October chill.
While the official number was not announced, the announcer in touch with the international event organizers, proclaimed that a world record had been set worldwide.
The Thrill the World event at Six Flags in Gurnee was a thrilling success. After setting the world record, the dancers and the audience went on to enjoy the rest of Fright Fest and the thrill rides at the popular theme park in the Chicago area.
