Gunwalker fallout: Democrats go mum on gun control

For the first time in decades Democrats on Capitol Hill have gone mum on one of their favorite subjects--gun control. The sound of silence on the issue has become deafening over the past few months in the fallout of the mind-boggling scandal in which Administration officials were caught attempting to jack up the statistics on U.S. guns in Mexico as a pretext for pushing for massive new firearms control laws in America, and then lying about it to Congress and the American people.

Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein, along with their colleague Dick Durbin--three of the most rabid proponents of gun control in the Senate and who first gave feet to the gross ATF lie that '90% of the guns used by Mexican drug cartels come from the United States'-- are suddenly as quiet as church mice on the subject.

Over in the House, Representatives Carolyn McCarthy, Elijah Cummings, and Carolyn Maloney, three of the most outspoken proponents of gun bans among the Democrats, have suddenly become afflicted with a severe case of lockjaw.

Pajamas Media, in noting the silence with which Democrats have responded to the news of the scandalous 'Operation Fast and Furious', also known as Project Gunwalker, stated,

As pressure has increased on the administration this week, the silence from House Democrats has been deafening. And like House Democrats, Senate Democrats are quietly abandoning the White House and attorney general.

Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein have consistently pushed for gun control throughout their Senate careers. Along with Rhode Island Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, they fabricated a report in June that supported the administration with a walked-back version of the 90-percent lie.

Schumer in particular has been a strong ally of the president, and yet he has also been silent on Operation Fast and Furious.

How many major political scandals have there been in recent memory where an entire political party fell silent for months at a time — and how should we interpret that silence?

Democratic senators and representatives may feel they have nothing to gain by speaking out on behalf of the gunwalking scandals. It would be a logical position to adopt if they’re assuming that Operation Fast and Furious is a serious political liability.

The last sentence in the quotation above would be an understatement. Even Democrats are now all too aware that the scandal is a potentially deadly issue from a political point of view. At long last, after months of relentless news reports on the illegal scheme, and its cover-up, Senator Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is ready to join with Darrell Issa in the House to conduct joint hearings on Gunwalker.

According to the Daily Caller:

On Friday, a bipartisan group of ten Arizona sheriffs called for a special investigator and prosecutor for Fast and Furious, and Gosar said he supports their call. CBS News reported late Friday that Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy will be holding Fast and Furious hearings as well. A spokesperson for Leahy though, said the hearing would just be a general Justice Department oversight hearing, not a Fast and Furious specific hearing.

A central issue that is sure to be a focal-point of the joint Congressional investigation is the fact that Attorney-General Eric Holder, in sworn testimony, stated he knew nothing of the Gunwalker scheme, although secret tapes and documents made public last week indicate that he received regular briefings on the operation beginning in 2010.

Not only did Holder state that he knew nothing of it but Barack Obama did the same and defended his Attorney-General, which raises the specter that perhaps Obama knew all along as well. A scandal of this magnitude involving so many various agencies of the federal government could not be realistically conducted without the express knowledge and approval of the President of the Untied States.
