Gunsmoke’s Marshal Matt Dillon dead at 88

James Arness, who for 20 years starred as Marshal Matt Dillon on the CBS television series “Gunsmoke,” died Friday, according to the Associated Press. He was 88.

Families in Merced County watched the weekly series beginning in 1955 on Channel 30, which was then Fresno’s affiliate.

Arness’ death comes only months after the death of his brother, Peter Graves, best known for his TV series “Mission: Impossible.”

Arness got the job as Marshal Dillon after John Wayne turned the part down and recommended Arness, who had been making movies since 1947.

Most of the major stars of the TV series are now gone:

  • Dennis Weaver, who portrayed Chester in early seasons of the series, passed away in 2006;
  • Milburn Stone, who portrayed Doc, died in 1980;
  • Amanda Blake, who portrayed Kitty, died in 1989;
  • Ken Curtis, who portrayed Festus died in 1991 – he was living in Fresno at the time of his death;

Burt Reynolds, who portrayed Quint in 50 episodes, 1962-65, is now 75 and remains active as an actor.
