Officers investigating gunshots near a west side bar wound up busting a sloppy drug courier early yesterday morning, according to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit News and WWJ-950AM. Seized were a staggering 5 kilos of cocaine, having an estimated street value of $2 million. Charges are pending against a 42 year old Ypsilanti man, who is to be arraigned no later than Monday.
The serendipitous seizure unfolded after officers cruising near Grandview and West Eight Mile at 1 AM Saturday heard two gunshots that seemed to have issued near the Splash Bar and Grill on Eight Mile. The officers pulled into the parking lot and began looking around, when they observed a man getting out of a silver, 2004 Infiniti.
The officers wanted to ask the man if he had heard the shots, but when they got close they noticed that he smelled of marijauna and alcohol. That led the officers to check out his vehicle. There they detected a strong odor of burned marijuana, and observed an open duffel bag on the front seat. The bag turned out to contain the 5 kilos (11 pounds) of cocaine.
Later that day, Chief Warren Evans praised the officers for their good police work, and said: "Having this quantity of cocaine off the streets is significant not just for the seizure, but for the shootings and other drug related issues that likely will be prevented as a result."
