Guns on the run

There is one group in this country that most definitely believe that new restrictions on gun ownership are liable to be instituted in the wake of the Newtown massacre. There is one group that is almost certain that everyone in this country to the left of, say, Wayne LaPierre is out to get them and their guns. Who is this prescient group who are, very likely, right?

The gun nuts.

It’s actually been quite a few weeks for the gun control debate. And the gun nuts are in full fury. Mr. LaPierre of the NRA has suggested that everything but guns was to blame for the Newtown and other gun massacres of the past few years. Violent movies and video games are to blame. Our lack of focus on mental illness is to blame. Politicians were to blame for not enforcing existing laws…laws Mr. LaPierre conveniently doesn’t mention his organization opposed, as well. But the poor AR-15…with it’s 30 round magazine or 100 round drum? How could such an innocent weapon be to blame?

His solution to the gun crisis? More guns. Armed guards at all our schools. And, failing that, arming all our teachers. After all, had the principal at Newtown had a weapon, she might have brought down the shooter before he could do any harm.

Talk about Cloud Cuckooland!

Unfortunately, it gets worse. Gun rights advocates talk of new gun control regulations fomenting a “Second American Revolution”. Talk show host Alex Jones, ranting on Piers Morgan’s CNN show, warned that 1776 would come again if anyone came for his guns. And Tactical Response CEO James Yeager said he might have to “start killing people” if the Obama Administration took any executive action to restrict gun sales.

This is the response of supposedly responsible people to the murder of twenty little children? This is their response to the river of blood that has flowed from Columbine to Virginia Tech to Aurora to Newtown? These are the people who hold themselves up as the defenders of Americans’ gun rights?

One begins to wonder exactly who should be locked in the padded rooms.

Any sane individual realizes that semi-automatic rifles with huge magazines should be in the hands of our military and no one else. No hunter needs a hundred rounds to bring down a deer. No one can rationally hope to protect their homes with an AR-15. Thankfully, more and more of our fellow citizens are beginning to realize this and are starting to support common-sense gun control legislation. The gun nuts realize this and it’s starting to drive them crazy.

Well…crazier.
