Guns Defend Against Tyranny…Really?
Many gun owners stand firmly behind the second amendment right to bear. Early in American history, armed citizens was seen as being imperative to protecting the country against tyranny. Early American history would probably have been significantly different if it weren’t due to armed citizens willing to fight in the Civil War. Yet, this is not so much the case today. The weapons that citizens used in 1700’s were in close parallel to the technology used by the military. There was some experimentation with new weapons during the period; however, the predominant weapon used by both citizens and the military was the musket.
Today, we call an assault rifle a military weapon, but in reality, soldiers would be ad an extreme disadvantage if they went to battle armed solely with an “assault styled” weapons that are discussed in the media today. For starters, they are not fully automatic weapons. While military personnel will not use full auto when attempting to shoot for precision, they do have the ability to switch to automatic to provide suppression fire providing a tactical advantage. Secondly, an M-60 does a much better job!
You are not going to stop a tyrannical government by owning a couple of AR-15 knockoffs. If you look at Libya, the main reason that people were able to topple the government was because of military defections and the help of the international community. While countries didn’t fight with boots on the ground, they ensured that certain air and ground assets that the Libyan regime developed off the backs of the people were not used against them. This made a fair fight. It is doubtful in a second American Revolution that the international community would come to America’s aid in that fashion. So yes, while you have an assault rifle, a drone drops a missile through your window. Having assault weapons solely for stopping a tyrannical government only means you determine how you die.
