As long as there has been a “Gundam” anime or manga series, there has always been Gundam plastic model kits for fans of the series and fans of building toy plastic robots to buy. During the March 29-31 weekend of Sakura-Con in Washington, thousand of attendees got to see impressive feats of the gunpla (portmonteau of “Gundam” and plastic model) hobby at the Bluefin Distribution booth.
Gunpla features a variety of toys and model kits spanning the “Gundam” series. These model kits come in various sizes, complexity, detail, and articulation. The hours spent clipping Gundam components from plastic trees, filing off the burrs, snapping parts together as instructed, detailing, adding decals, and posing the toys result in fun for the builder and an impressive display for Sakura-Con attendees observing the completed works. Skilled gunpla enthusiasts got to show off their work to Bluefin Distribution since Sakura-Con was a qualifier round for the 2013 Gunpla Builders World Cup for prizes and recognition.
Those inspired by the Gundam displays had the chance to purchase Gundam model kits of their own at Bluefin Distribution at prices ranging from $15 to hundreds of dollars depending on the size of the kit. The kits were available in various scales and difficulty levels. Bluefin Productions even had Gundam markers available to purchase so they could better detail their finished models.
