Police shot and killed suspected gunman named Kurt Myers, 64, of Mohawk, N.Y. Myers was killed on Thursday a after a bizarre shooting spree and a 20-hour standoff in upstate New York. He apparently started a fire in his own apartment, then took a long gun and went on a shooting spree. Four people were killed and two were wounded at a gas station and a barbershop on Wednesday morning. Myers was on the run for several hours until he was cornered in an abandoned building in Herkimer, NY. According to a March 14 ABC News article, he shot and killed a police K-9 that was sent into the unidentified abandoned building ahead of police officers. He also fired shots at passing police cars. At that point, the officers returned fire and killed Meyers.
A neighbor who lived next door to Myers described an older man who lived alone and was never friendly. Rendall told ABC News that Meyers never returned a greeting.
Schools and other buildings in Herkimer County remained locked down during the shooting spree and subsequent standoff.
According to New York Daily News, Meyers allegedly walked into John’s Barbershop in Mohawk and started an argument there. He shot and killed Harry Montgomery, 68, of Mohawk, and Michael Rancier, 57, of Herkimer. He shot the shop’s owner, John Seymour, and customer Dan Haslauer. Both are alive and in critical condition.
He traveled to Gaffey’s Jiffy Lube, which is about a mile away in Herkimer. He opened fire again and killed two more individuals. Thomas Stefka was an employee. Michael Renshaw was a state correctional officer.
Meyers was missing for several hours until about 1:30 p.m. when police surrounded him at the abandoned building. Police were wary because Meyers left several long guns at his apartment and was witnessed using at least one long gun. His records show one previous crime, an arrest for driving while intoxicated in 1973.
