Gun show accident: Accidental shooting of 3 with 12-gauge shotgun

The gun show accident that happened in North Carolina on Saturday left three people injured including a retired sheriff’s deputy. The accident at the gun show occurred when 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson from Wilmington in North Carolina wanted to have his 12-gauge shotgun checked according to a Reuters report on Jan. 19, 2013.

The accidental gun show shooting took place in Raleigh, N.C., at the entrance of the Dixie Gun and Knife Show. Gary Lynn Wilson went to the entrance of the gun show in order to have his personal firearm inspected.

When Gary Lynn Wilson took his shotgun out of its gun case, the 12-gauge shotgun accidentally fired.

The host of the gun show, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, reported that during the accidental gun show shooting, “Two patrons of the gun show were injured - a 50-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman - as was a 54-year-old retired Wake County Sheriff's deputy who was working at the show. None of the injuries were life-threatening.”

Brian Long, a spokesperson for the gun show host said that all three were “struck by birdshot from the gun.”

Despite the gun show accident, the gun show host will continue the gun show event on Sunday as previously planned. However, no private gun sales or the carrying of personal guns will be allowed while on the gun show property.
