Gun sales show large increases in small towns, not just big cities

Does the anti-gun lobby know what it has started with their attempt to ban guns, perhaps not?

Some of the anti-gun lobby says that they only want the automatics and semi-automatics made unlawful. However, there are those who believe that theory to be way off base. Many in the Obama administration are out to get your guns, and many, including this writer, feel that that there is a much deeper motive than just removing automatics and semi-automatics. Some believe that his administration is out to take away all guns.

With that in mind, today, Jan. 7, 2013, I had the opportunity to interview Shane Porter, President and Founder of Porter’s Pawn & Bargain Center since 1995. Porter’s is located in the little town of Mountain Home, in Northern Ark., population, about 12, 000. Porter’s Pawn also has another store in Harrison, Ark., about 60 miles West of Mountain, Home. Harrison is just slightly larger in population than Mountain Home.

I requested the interview regarding the increase in gun sales since the national press has noted large increases in gun sales, but I wondered what was happening in the small country towns like Mountain Home. Porter’s sells a variety of items, including guitars, jewelry, lawn mowers, chain saws and more, but a substantial number of guns and ammo are sold.

Shane advised that he hadn’t run the figures on paper yet, but estimated that their gun sales were up at least 30 percent over normal. Porter’s sells good used firearms, as well as new firearms. Since starting the business nearly 20 years ago, Shane says that he has seen this type of increase before, during other presidential administrations on occasion, and usually the sales return to a normal as time goes by. It would seem that people’s fears subside as political logic takes over.

Currently, Shane says that “product” is very scarce on some brands and calibers. That includes firearms and ammo. The products in great demand at Porter’s right now are pieces like, the .25 and .380 caliber semi’s as well as the AR’s.

When asked about the current laws with regards to the Newtown Conn. incident, and the fact that there seems to be an abundance of politicians who want to make gun laws tighter, Shane said,

“The laws that are already on the books are more than adequate to protect the public if they are enforced.”

When asked why he believes there is an increase in gun sales, Shane said he believes that the increase in sales is a “fear and anxiety” based phenomenon. People are fearful that they will not have a right to purchase these popular firearms in the future, and they are fearful what might happen if they don’t have them. In reality, firearms are purchased for one of three reasons, sport, work or protection.

So, gun and ammo sales are on the increase in small town America too, not just the big cities like Chicago, New York or Dallas.

So, we would have to conclude that it doesn’t appear that the Obama administration or the anti-gun lobby has given any consideration to what they have created with the talk of banning any kind of firearm.
