On December 14th the Nation watched in horror as the news came in about a fatal shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut. We saw pictures of parents hugging their children with the relief of knowing that they were not hurt and also the unfortunate pictures of families of the faculty and children who were viciously murdered in this senseless massacre.
As the hours of watching this turned into days, we received more and more information about what this young man, 20 year-old Adam Lanza did and why it was done. In the midst of all of this chaos, we heard many different politicians come out about the need for gun control including Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) who wrote up a bill for January of next year that makes illegal 120 firearms and creates more regulation concerning the ownership of the firearms that will either be grandfathered in or able to be kept which are few and far between when concerning this bill. President Obama also put Vice President Joe Biden on a task-force to eventually recommend new gun legislation.
There were also different public uprisings concerning this shooting by different celebrities who created a video advocating stricter gun control and CNN anchor Piers Morgan who said he may “deport himself” if American doesn't change its “crazy gun laws.”
I completely understand the desire to keep people safe from maniacs like Lanza especially young ones like the ones who were needlessly murdered just a little over two weeks ago, but why are guns always to blame? Why is it that people blame guns when we slaughter 3700 children every day through the method of abortion? Or when parents let their kids play video games and watch movies all day that have nothing but violence and sex in it instead of pushing them outside for the day? This is not a gun problem, a video game problem, a movie problem or what have you. This is a people problem. We are living in the culture of death and so many people like Piers Morgan and Senator Feinstein are to blame. We blame inanimate objects for these heinous crimes and it draws the blame away from the people who committed the crime and the people that let it happen such as the mother of Adam Lanza. And the media ignores the people and organizations like the NRA who are saying just this.
We need to stop blaming objects for things like this and start really looking out how we raise our kids in this country. We need to concentrate on the protection of the family instead of thinking about banning an object cannot do anything unless a human being is using it. As the late Pope John Paul II said so eloquently, “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.”
