Statements Wednesday by Vice President Joe Biden that President Barack Obama is prepared to use executive orders to curb guns drew a rebuke from U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
"I stand ready to defend the Second Amendment and efforts to undermine our God-given rights," the freshman senator posted on his Facebook page.
"There are executive orders, executive action that can be taken," Reuters quoted Biden as saying. "We haven't decided what that is yet."
"The president and I are determined to take action," Biden said.
"We are not going to get caught up in the notion that unless we can do everything, we're going to do nothing," Biden said. "It's critically important that we act."
"Biden strongly suggested that the Administration would issue executive orders to 'take action' with respect to gun control," Cruz wrote. "Let us hope that this is just another one of the Vice President's infamous gaffes and not another end-run of Congress and the Constitutional balance of powers through unilateral action by the President."
Several proposals have been introduced by Democrats to strengthen gun control laws, including banning firearms with magazines with a capacity of more than 10 bullets, mandatory background checks on everyone buying ammunition and banning the sale of ammunition on the Internet.
