This is just disgusting: Neil Heslin is the father of a six-year-old boy who was among the 20 elementary students shot dead by Adam Lanza at Newtown, and he just wants some common sense gun regulation to prevent another massacre like this one from happening. Nonetheless, gun nuts gathered at a Hartford hearing before the Gun Violence Prevention Working Group and they proved to be as despicable as ever.
Rabid supporters of the Second Amendment literally heckled the slain boy's father. Huffington Post reported this morning, Jan. 29, 2013, that Heslin was interrupted by enthusiastic conservatives as he gave an emotional testimony about his son's life and death. He said the following:
"I still can't see why any civilian, anybody in this room in fact, needs weapons of that sort. You're not going to use them for hunting, even for home protection."
Pro-gun activists cut him off shouting "Second Amendment!"
Neil Heslin is absolutely correct, for one thing. These people do not need assault rifles and essentially weapons of mass death to hunt deer or protect their homes. Handguns and shotguns get just as much done without the likelihood of taking out massive groups of people. That's not the point of this report, however. The point if this report is to share how disturbingly open these gun nuts are, even in the face of multiple child deaths.
When the Newtown shooting happened at Sandy Hook Elementary parents around the world held their children tighter and mourned the deaths of 20 little lives. Twenty little people who weren't old enough to even grasp the reality of what guns do to people were senselessly slaughtered like animals by Adam Lanza, and what did these pro-gun types do? Instead of holding their children, instead of speaking out against brutal gun violence, they held their guns tight and disregarded the bloodshed. Politicians with the NRA breathing down their necks spoke out quickly about protecting their Second Amendment rights and then people like these hecklers at Monday's event take it a step further and continue the victimization of the parents of these murdered babies.
