NATIONAL (BTSNews) Jan 16, 2013 -- One month after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, President Obama is set to propose new gun laws banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, and imposing strict background checks for all gun purchases. The President, with Vice President Biden, has presented the proposals at the White House, and has urged Congress to act quickly to pass the proposed gun control legislation. In the meantime, the President has as many as 23 Executive Orders ready to impose the proposals immediately if Congress does not act in a timely manner.
BUT BEHIND THE SCENES, there is a significant school of thought across the nation, and particularly among Republicans, that the President's ultimate goal is to totally disarm gun owners. But the President's gun control laws may have unintended consequences, including fostering domestic terrorism, as indicated by national homicide data and recent attempted school and mall bombings. In the meantime, New York proposed gun laws banning assault weapons and magazines with more than seven rounds became law yesterday.
Yet the President still faces an uphill battle for his gun control laws. The NRA and other gun rights groups have vowed to oppose any attempt to restrict gun rights, and have begun an ad campaign on the issue. Citing the presence of armed security for his own daughters, many gun rights advocates have taken up the banner of calling President Obama a "elite hypocrite" who is willing to leave other American families unprotected from criminals and random gun violence while his family remains safe behind a wall of guns. Other advocates, such as Republican Congressional Representative Steve Stockman has threatened to push impeachment hearings against the President if the White house if Obama moves forward on gun control unilaterally.
