NATIONAL (BTSNews) Jan. 14, 2013 -- In North Houston, Texas, a 19 year-old man was apparently accidentally shot by his mother in their home. Harris County deputies are still investigating, and have not disclosed the victim's condition, other than to confirm that he had been rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment. The police have not disclosed why the mother was allegedly handling the gun, as opposed to keeping it secure and unloaded in a gun safe.
In November 2012, a Houston teenager accidentally killed his 18 year-old friend while passing two loaded weapons back and forth outside the 18 year-old's home, and a father accidentally killed his 14 year-old son while attempting to clear the weapon. In September earlier that year, a Central Texas soldier accidentally shot and killed a friend while trying to "scare" that friend from the hiccups.
BEHIND THE SCENES, 606 people died from unintentional shootings in 2010 according to the latest available data. 14,675 people were wounded in unintentional shootings in 2011. By way of contrast, in 2009, 76,309 deaths were attributable to motor vehicle accidents, with 33,808 of those deaths attributable at least In part to alcohol intoxication, and 5,474 deaths attributable to driver distraction. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2007 -- the latest year with available data -- the three leading causes of injury deaths in the United States were motor vehicles, poisoning and firearms. The death rate for poisonings more than doubled from 1979 to 2007, while death rates for motor vehicle traffic and firearms decreased during the same period.
