Gun control talk by politicians leads to ammunition shortages

The renewed gun control talk by politicians reacting to the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Conn. last December has caused hoarding of ammunition and shortages at gun shops. USA Today is reporting today that gun dealers are seeing shortages in many types of ammunition due to customers buying large quantities out of fear of regulations or bans on guns and ammunition.

“Gun shops are running low on ammunition from a run by customers fearful of potential gun-control legislation, according to gun retailers and customers,” says the USA Today article.

In many instances, ammunition prices have doubled and some types, such as 9mm and 22 long rifle are unavailable. Many gun shop owners are reporting they can't keep the stuff in stock and when they get a shipment of it, customers buy it up quickly. Some gun shops are placing limits on how many boxes individual customers can purchase and still report shortages.

Speaking to a shooting department representative for the Kodak, Tenn. (just East of Knoxville) location Bass Pro Shops, I was told “we don't have a single round of 22 long rifle ammunition in our store.” He told me that when they get a shipment in, usually in the morning, it is sold out within an hour or two.

All of the local gun shop owners I have called in this area, which is Southwestern Virginia and Northeastern Tennessee, report being sold out of many type of ammunition including 22 long rifle and 9mm. Most say they don't know when they will be able to keep the stuff in stock.

Online listings of ammunition by retailers such as Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mountain and others show most forms of ammunition listed as out of stock or sold out.

At the same time, the Department of Homeland Security has purchased more than one billion rounds of ammunition. It has not been announced what purpose is intended with these purchases of ammunition.
