On Friday, December 13th, another school shooting occurred in Colorado. Armed with a .12 gauge pump-action shotgun, three Molotov cocktails, a machete in a canvas scabbard, and more than 125 rounds of ammunition in two bandoliers strapped across his chest and in his backpack, 18 year old Karl Pierson was ready to kill. . He sought to kill other young people before killing himself and leaving others to again ask why?
It appears that there will be no ban on “assault weapons”, nor background checks for mental conditions or felony convictions. Earlier this year Harry Reid, Senate Majority leader said that "Right now her amendment, using the most optimistic numbers, has less than 40 votes. That's not 60." Reid was referring to the amendment filed by California Senator Dianne Feinstein.
The NRA and the majority members of the Republican Party, and enough conservative Democrats seemed convinced that a ban on any guns would constitute an erosion of second amendment rights. As the issue fades in the sunset of another legislative year, it appears that most Americans have grown insensitive to any further action.
The evidence shown by the shootings at Columbine, Aurora, Newtown, Jacksonville, and Sandy Hook added to the nightly slaughter taking place in Chicago would seem to indicate that something should be done. But nothing will be done.
Nothing significant will be done on purchases at the hundreds of gun shows conducted monthly across the country and virtually nothing will be done concerning guns that are purchased over the internet.
President Obama, for all of his rhetoric, appears to be impotent to do anything more.
As a result more children will be killed. More memorials will be built. More killings will take place on the streets of Chicago, Brunswick and wherever bullets are sold. And the Band played on.
