Gun control a militant witch hunt, says California GOP

Members of the California State Assembly Republic Caucus on Monday denounced moves for new gun control legislation while advocating a series of administrative and legislative steps they say target necessary reforms to help safeguard public safety.

“California has some of the nation’s strongest gun laws," said Assemblymember Melissa Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore). "In fact, some of the ideas that President Obama has proposed in response to the Newtown tragedy are already the law in California. A militant witch hunt to disarm the tens of thousands of law-abiding gun owners will do little to prevent future tragedies. One of the most sensible things we can do to prevent crime is to ensure guns stay out of the hands of criminals in the first place. The Department of Justice estimates that almost 20,000 Californians illegally possess firearms, but law enforcement doesn’t have the resources to take these weapons off our streets.”

Among items in the GOP gun agenda are increasing penalties against criminals who illegally buy, sell or possess firearms; and increasing penalties for felons in possession of a firearm who were convicted of specific serious felonies.

Republicans also propose legislation to prohibit the publication of names and addresses of certain gun owners and extending the mandatory treatment period for the mentally ill.

Schools would be required to develop safety plans that would be subject to an annual audit.
