On Feb.2, 2013, the Church of the Open Door located at 201 Gold Street in Brooklyn, N.Y. hosted an event sponsored by the NYPD in partnership with local clergy and the District Attorney's office that aided in the removal of guns off the streets of New York City.
Over 113 firearms were bought off of the public and over 8,100 firearms have been removed from the streets since the program began in 2008. The public is urged to turn in firearms to any police precinct in New York City for $100. Any person with any knowledge of a person harboring an illegal handgun can also report any information to Operation GunStop.
Operation Gun Stop has removed thousands of illegal guns that have been the predominant force behind New York City homicides and aided to the arrest of thousands of criminals.
The Police Foundation gives rewards of $1,000 for anonymous tips to 1-866-GUN-STOP. The Gun Stop Program has led to nearly 4,800 arrests and the removal of 2,700 illegal weapons since the program’s inception in 2001, according to the NYCPoliceFoundation.org.
