The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut took the nation by storm, and while many have been understanding about common sense gun laws, not everyone is as supportive.
Appearing on CNN last Friday night was Larry Ward, the creator and Chairman of "Gun Appreciation Day." Ward noted that he came up with the idea for a national gun day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King with hopes that it would “strike the fear of God in the gun-grabbing politicians.” Ward continued, claiming that slavery wouldn't have existed if the slaves were allowed to own their own guns.
“The truth is, I think Martin Luther King would agree with me if he were alive today that if African-Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history. And I believe wholeheartedly that’s essential to liberty.”
Like many other extreme right-wing Americans, Ward's unhealthy obsession with guns is a roadblock in the way of progress for sensible gun laws. While Ward and other gun rights activists have promoted the false theory that the government will 'take their guns," innocent Americans, like the 20 children killed at Sandy Hook, are at risk each day.
Gun Appreciation Day is scheduled for January 19, 2013, just 48 hours before President Obama's inauguration, with the idea for all Americans to send the Obama administration a message by buying as many guns and bullets as possible.
