Gulfport residents may benefit by up to a 20% reduction in flood insurance costs

Gulfport's Department of Urban Development has worked to minimize the city’s risk of flood over the last two years moving its rating from Class 8 to Class 6 under the National Flood Insurance Program's (CRS) Community Rating System.

What does this mean for the consumer? Many homeowners in Gulfport may now be eligible for a 20 percent discount on their flood insurance because of the decrease in flood risk.

Said Mayor George Schloegel, “this shows how dedicated the City of Gulfport is to keeping its people and their property safe. While the price reduction is a big benefit of the new rating, it also shows how hard we’re working to reduce property damage and save lives.”

Gary Anderson, the city’s floodplain manager, who helped correct hundreds of non-compliant properties that violated flood elevation requirements said, “this is great news for our department and for property owners in our city.”

What did Gulfport actually do:
  • Corrected all non-compliant properties on a list
  • Increased protection for new development
  • Accelerated awareness about the dangers of flood and the importance of being prepared
  • The results; a new rating and as much as a 20-percent drop in the cost of insurance.
According to FEMA, flooding is the single most common cause of disaster in the U.S.

The Community Rating System was implemented in 1990 as a way to recognize and encourage floodplain management that exceeds the minimum NFIP standards.
