Guilty Pleasures…the Real Ones

Women’s guilty pleasures: Wine. Shopping. Chick flicks. Shoes. Fifty shades of chocolate.

That’s what you think.

Well, okay, those are all true, especially that chocolate thing… But also, more and more, women from all walks of life, from all kinds of backgrounds, are indulging in, and sharing, with others, their true guilty pleasures, and these are not your mother’s demure delights.

Even more than power colors, enter girls with power tools. Viviane and Tonja love their chain saws and drills. Colleen cannot exist without her hammer and at least one set of screwdrivers. Even if you are not a single mom, when necessity often dictates having to learn how to use (and then growing to love) anything from a plumber’s wrench to a skill saw, the feeling of power, not just in the hum of the tools but in the accomplishment of the project, is fulfilling enough to spur many onto the next project.

Other guilty pleasures lean less toward chick flicks and more toward car crashes, gladiators, and Mel Gibson when he was blue but not crazy. Vicky likes “any of the Marvel action hero movies”, while Stephanie prefers the online gaming of Dynasty Warriors. Andrea and Karen like their Jason Bourne movies, and Libby loves her Sons of Anarchy.

Whether you like action or suspense, there are (fortunately) many shows out there to choose from, and women don’t have to feel guilty about enjoying them, even if they seem to be geared toward the fellas.

When asked if he considers his audience in terms of a gender breakdown before sitting down to write, David Goyer, producer (Threshold TV series), director (Blade: Trinity) and writer/co-writer of many non-guilty, but totally indulgent, pleasures (including the Dark Knight trilogy and Call of Duty: Black Ops video games) says no, “I just write what I like to write and hope that it finds an audience!” His work certainly has found a captive audience – both male and female – and his upcoming Da Vinci’s Demons looks not to disappoint either.

Here’s to “guilty pleasures” that are more pleasurable than guilt-inducing. Enjoy!
