With just a few months until the theatrical release of Pacific Rim, a new trailer was released by Qualcomm on Monday, Jan. 7. The trailer was unveiled as part of a company presentation at a Las Vegas convention. The action thriller will arrive in theaters on July 12, 2013. The official plot synopsis can be seen below:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
The trailer had a total run time of just under two minutes, but manages to pack in plenty of robots, explosions and dramatic speeches. Featuring tons of different angles of the Jaegers fighting robots, the humans can be seen piloting the giant suits in a virtual reality scenario where the suits mimic their motions. Set to the tone of ominous music, the Jaegers must battle to prevent the apocalypse. However, the foreign enemy doesn't come from outer space, but from the trenches of the planet's deep oceans. While the Jaegers feature prominently in the trailer, being dropped in the water and being commanded by soldiers, the monstrous Kaiju are barely glimpsed but seem to have two arms, two legs and some type of body armor.
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the cast includes Ron Perlman (Hannibal Chau), Idris Elba (Stacker Pentecost), Charlie Day (Dr. Newton Geiszler), Burn Gorman (Gottlieb), and Charlie Hunnam (Raleigh Becket). The science fiction thriller Pacific Rim is expected to open in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on July 12, 2013.
