In Guild Wars 2, the Thief’s role is the stereotypical rogue, Guild Wars style. They have stealth abilities, and they sneak out from the shadows. They’re all about one on one combat, surprising enemies, and disappearing without a trace. [A full list of Guild Wars 2 Professions]
Just like all professions, the Thief has five skills per weapon/weapon combo. Also, as quoted from the in game character creation page:
Thieves are adept at the art of stealth. They utilize surprise and shadow to get close to their enemies, and they’re deadly in one-on-one combat. They have an affinity for setting traps and going where they were never meant to go. (Thieves wear medium armor.)
Thieves can be either damage or support, depending on how you use them. Stop enemies, protect allies, or go in for the kill and run. Thieves are meant to work just like Rogue’s on most other MMORPG’s. They have a few ranged abilities too, but they’re primarily sneak and attack types of characters. They have a lot of stuns and negative debuffs for other characters. They can help by stopping offense, or being offense, depending on how they’re used.
