In Guild Wars 2, skill points are what players use to buy slot skills. These skill points are acquired in a unique way. Instead of gaining skill points as a player levels up, they’re gained from completing certain activities or reaching certain landmarks inside of the game. [Guild Wars 2 skills list]
When looking at an explored map, players can see a small blue badge over some spots of the map. These icons indicate an opportunity to obtain a skill point. Usually in each of these spots players must overcome some sort of trial in order to obtain the skill point, such as completing an event, or killing a boss. [Guild Wars 2 main page]
This system is nice because it forces players to explore the world in order to achieve maximum strength with their characters. It’s this system that forces players to obtain a more explorative sense of the world, and makes the whole experience more of a real adventure.
