Guide to ultra-distance triathlons

Have you completed an Ironman-distance triathlon and thought, "That was great -- what's next?" If so, you may be interested in an Ultra-Distance Triathlon.

What is an Ultra-Distance Triathlon?

Compared to an Ironman's race distances of 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run, an Ultra ups the ante to the following available distances:

  • Triple Triathlon - 7.2-mile swim, 336-mile bike and 78.6-mile run
  • Quadruple Triathlon - 9.6-mile swim, 448-mile bike and 104-mile run
  • Quintuple Triathlon - 12-mile swim, 560-mile bike and 131-mile run
  • Deca Triathlon - 24-mile swim, 1,120-mile bike and 262-mile run
  • Double Deca Triathlon - 48-mile swim, 2,240-mile bike and 524-mile run

Are there any Ultra-Distance Triathlon resources?

There is a book called Beyond the Iron, which was written by Wayne Kurtz, founder of RaceTwitch.com. It is a training guide that also offers information on events as well as tips and advice. It is available on Amazon.

There is also an International Ultra Triathlon Association (IUTA). Their website offers a listing of races, race rules, news, race results and more.

Are there any Ultra-Distance Triathlon races local to Maryland?

ChesapeakeMan Ultra-Distance Triathlon - This one is in Maryland, on the Eastern Shore. For 2011, it has been selected as the Mid-Atlantic Ultra-Distance Regional Championship. However, though it is labelled as an Ultra-Distance Triathlon, its distances are actually Ironman distances. This event is usually held in September, and this year is on September 24, 2011.

There is also an IUTA World Cup race in Lake Anna, Virginia in the fall, this year in October.
