The 18th annual SAG Awards will be aired this Sunday at 8pm EST, on both TNT and TBS, live from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center. Here are the nominees for the major film categories, with my picks in italics:
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:
The Artist
Bridesmaids
The Descendants
The Help
Midnight in Paris
~This is a tough call. I'm hoping that either The Help or Bridesmaids wins, but really any of these movies could win, as they all have great ensemble casts.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:
Demian Bichir, A Better Life
George Clooney, The Descendants
Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar
Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Brad Pitt, Moneyball
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:
Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Tilda Swinton, We Need to Talk About Kevin
Michelle Williams, My Week with MarilynÂ
~I would like to see Davis win, especially since Meryl Streep took home the Golden Globe already in this category. I haven't seen The Iron Lady or We Need to Talk About Kevin, but the other three were fabulous in their roles, and I would be happy with any of them as the winner.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:
Kenneth Branagh, My Week With Marilyn
Armie Hammer, J. Edgar
Jonah Hill, Moneyball
Nick Nolte, Warrior
Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Will win: Plummer or Nolte. Should win: Nolte or Branagh.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:
Berenice Bejo, The Artist
Jessica Chastain, The Help
Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids
Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer, The Help
~Again, a hard category. I've seen all of these films, including Albert Nobbs (as of yesterday), and these ladies all gave great performances. The Help was one of my favorite movies of 2011, though, so I'm going to have to go with Spencer for the win, who also took home the Golden Globe. I would be happy with any of these ladies as winners, though I will say that although I liked The Artist, I find it to be a bit overrated in terms of the other critics' reviews for it.
I'm not even going to try to speculate about the TV series, but I would be happy if any of these turned out to be true:
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble, Comedy: 30 Rock or The Big Bang Theory
Male Actor, Comedy: Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Female Actor, Comedy: Tina Fey, 30 Rock, OR Betty White, Hot in Cleveland
What are your picks for the winners - and losers - of the SAG Awards? And will you watch the show, or wait for the Oscars on February 26th?
