Walt Disney World (and Disneyland) is known for its interactive experiences are part of the atmosphere. Whether it’s singing at the American Idol Experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, talking with Crush at Epcot, or petting animals at Animal Kingdom, Disney invites its guests to take part in making the magic happen.
One of the longest-running experiences takes place at Frontierland, in the Magic Kingdom. Called the Frontier Hoedown, the show has been around for years in various forms. The Disney Parks Blog reveals the latest version of the show, an interactive dance experience called the Frontierland Hoedown Happening.
Frontierland Hoedown Happening at the Magic Kingdom
A cast member from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad walks into the street. Then other cast members – dressed in appropriate costumes – and Frontierland characters start to dance. Among the characters who participate are the Country Bears, Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Fox, and Bre’er Bear.
After the choreographed group dance, Disney guests are invited to join in the fun – with dancing and a processional for kids of all ages. The result is a lively line dance and hoedown in which Disney's choreographed action and spontaneous guests participation create a show in which guests are the true stars of the show. The guest portion, which includes the Hokey Pokey, is particularly popular with young children.
For guests who want to take advantage of the chance to literally dance in the streets of the Magic Kingdom – and who doesn’t have the urge? – simply head to Frontierland from Main Street and hang out. Because the show emphasizes spontaneity, times for the Hoedown are not published.
Hint: pay attention when the Country Bears come out; it’s not always a sign the hoedown is about to begin, but they are key participants.
But there’s plenty to see and do in Frontierland to make it worth visiting even without the guarantee of the Frontier Hoedown. In addition to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the area is the site of Splash Mountain, Country Bear Jamboree, the Shootin' Arcade, and the child-friendly Tom Sawyer’s Island. Street performances in the frontier-country-hoedown tradition are also frequent, and quite entertaining.

Hi Debra -- I really enjoyed this content (the video brought back a LOT of awesome Disney memories). I remember our last trip when we were seated at Pecos Bill's and people just started to dance ... my son Ethan looked at me with a peculiar smirk, "What are they doing daddy" ... "Just watch lil' buddy". Before long the street was filled with people dancing and laughing (yes, Ethan and my other children loved joining in ... what a great memory).
I'm so glad you posted this, Robb. First, I love dancing at Disney this, the 'Ohana character breakfast processional, the Block Party Bash at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Biergarten in Epcot's Germany. I believe there's even video of me dancing before the Up & Away 5K at Walt Disney World's marathon weekend.
Second, you're so right. These are the moments that create extra-special memories for a Disney trip. They're definitely not to be overlooked.
Last, good suggestion about Peco Bill's. It's a great spot to hang out in while visiting Frontierland, especially for families with kids who like burgers and hot dogs! Thanks for adding that!
