Ugadi festival is celebrated in India and across the world by Hindus on April 4, 2011.

In India the festival is celebrated in different ways in different places. In the Indian States of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the New Year celebration is popularly known as Ugadi and celebrated in late March or early April (Chaitra Paksh). In Maharashtra, the New Year known as Gudi Padwa is celebrated at the same time.

People believe that Lord Brahma formed the universe on this occasion. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu is incarnated in the form of Matsya on earth.

People wear new clothes and exchange sweets. Friends and families visit each other to exchange greetings. Delicious foods are prepared and sweets exchanged.

People visits temple and listen to the “Panchangasravanam” and the priest forecasts events for the year.

Ugadi or Gudi Pawda is a great occasion for family and friends to get together. This escorts in the new year, with the hope that the year will be bring in fortune and good luck.
