Gucci gets gothic for fall 2012 at Milan Fashion Week

Gucci sent their fall/winter 2012/2013 collection down the Milan Fashion Week runway today and it featured a much darker, more gothic and vampire-like color palette than what was shown by the iconic design house for fall 2011. One year ago Gucci showed bright colors and blocked them together, helping to explode the current color blocking trend. For fall 2012, Gucci moved away from the trend they started and let black rule the runway.

Gucci sent flowing, vampire-like silhouettes down the Milan Fashion Week runway for fall 2012 paired with structured and stiff satchel handbags. The handbags were sleek and shown primarily in black with one large tote bag shown in deep chocolate brown leather. The contrast between the soft fabrications and the structured handbags was interesting; almost suggesting a fusion between the mortal world and a vampire clan.

Models wore washed out make-up with deep, dark gothic lipstick and their hair was worn down in a hairstyle reminiscent of the 1970’s flower children. The flowing apparel on the fall 2012 runway was shown in velvet burnout, thick velvet, silk, brocade, sheer chiffon and an occasional dark floral pattern. The color palette was dark and featured mainly black ensembles with an occasional pop of dark burgundy, dark green, deep purple, dark blue and washed-out dark chocolate brown.

There were two distinct handbag styles on Gucci’s fall 2012 runway at Milan Fashion Week. There were structured satchels shown in black with and without a front pocket, as well as a large, less structured weekender tote. The satchel’s were shown in both smooth leather and exotic skins while the weekenders were shown in vintage leather, thick velvet burnout fabric, black and dark chocolate brown.

Gucci did show one trend from last year which is continuing into fall 2012; bold jewelry. Gucci showed chunky necklaces and shoulder dusting earrings on the Milan Fashion Week runway all in the same type of material; jet black resin.

The overall collection from Gucci for fall 2012 was a bold move away from the colorful and lighthearted collections shown by the design house over the past few seasons. The vampish, gothic collection was also a dark contrast to what other designers have been showing. It should be interesting to see if the end of color blocking is near, after all Gucci started the trend last year, perhaps they also have the power to end it.
