The superhero film set in outer space grossed $94.3 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday. ‘Guardians’ destroyed the record for the best debut in August, previously held by ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ which opened with $69.3 million in 2007.
Last weekend’s No. 1 movie, ‘Lucy,' slipped to No. 2 in its second weekend, earning $18.2 million for a total of $79.5 million since opening July 25.
James Brown biopic ‘Get On Up’ debuted at No. 3 with $13.5 million.
‘Hercules,’ starring Dwayne Johnson, dropped two spots to No. 4 in its second weekend, earning $11 million for a total of $52.6 million since opening July 25.
‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ fell two spots to No. 5 in its fourth weekend, earning $8.6 million for a total of $189.3 million since opening July 11.

‘Divergent’ is the dystopian action romance based on the best-selling Veronica Roth novel about a world divided by factions based on virtues and a girl named Tris who doesn’t fit any faction, also called a Divergent. When Tris discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, she joins a mysterious group to find out why they’re considered such a dangerous threat. Only 41 percent of reviews were positive on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film ‘opens its planned trilogy in a disappointingly predictable fashion.’ Rated PG-13. ‘God’s Not Dead’ is a religious drama about a Christian student who challenges his college philosophy professor’s curriculum. Only 17 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes. Rated PG. Watch the official trailer here.
‘Need for Speed’ is an action crime drama about a street racer on a mission to avenge a friend’s death by participating in a cross-country race. Only 22 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film features ‘stock characters and a preposterous plot.’ Loosely based on the video games. Rated PG-13. ‘Oculus’ is a supernatural horror film about a woman who tries to destroy a haunted mirror she blames for the death of her parents. A solid 74 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film features ‘an emphasis on dread over gore.' Rated R. Watch the official trailer here.
