'Guardians of the Galaxy': New trailer offers more Guardians, wit and action

“I come from Earth, a planet of outlaws.” And so begins the second trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, which the studio revealed––following a teaser that built more than a little anticipation––on Monday, May 19. The voiceover this time comes courtesy of Chris Pratt, who leads the film as Peter Quill a.k.a. Star Lord. Over the course of the 2:31 clip, Star Lord gives us the rundown, introducing each of the titular Guardians in longer form than the first trailer. His narration eventually gives way to clips that paint a picture of the relations among the group and hint a bit at the plot––Glenn Close (as Nova Prime Rael) shows up just long enough to posit, “Are you telling me the fate of 12 billion people is in the hands of these criminals?”

But first come Star Lord’s descriptions. He breaks down the team thusly: “So here we are. A thief (himself), two thugs (Rocket Raccoon and Groot), an assassin (Gamora) and a maniac (Drax the Destroyer).” And though that certainly paints our intergalactic heroes as anything but heroic, what follows (“But we’re not gonna stand by as evil wipes out the galaxy.”) lets us know that we’ll likely see the Guardians nonetheless thrown into the role of heroes over the course of the film.

Notably for fans, this trailer offers up a peek at the voice work of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as Rocket Raccoon and Groot, respectively. The aforementioned teaser for this trailer featured a few seconds of Cooper’s voice, but this represents the first real chance viewers have had to get a strong impression of the voices bringing the dynamic duo to life.

Once again the trailer is set to a song that matches the playful, yet action laden tone the film appears to be going for––this time it’s Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit in the Sky, though Hooked on a Feeling does crop up again in the closing seconds.

In addition to some nice clips juxtaposing action and humor, we also get a quick glimpse of Benicio Del Toro as The Collector and see a bit more of Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer than we did in the previous trailer.

In short, Aug. 1 cannot come soon enough.

Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, Djimon Hounsou and Karen Gillan star alongside Chris Pratt. Those unfamiliar with the characters these bevy of stars will be playing can find oodles of information straight from the source (Marvel) here.
