Marvel Studios/Walt Disney Pictures' sci-fi action flick "Guardians of the Galaxy" easily debuted at No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending Aug. 3, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on Aug. 3, "Guardians of the Galaxy" had $94 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending Aug. 3, 2014. "Guardians of the Galaxy" (directed by James Gunn) stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista as renegade superheroes. Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel have voice roles in the movie.

According to Box Office Mojo, "Guardians of the Galaxy" is easily the biggest debut ever for an August release; the previous record holder, 'The Bourne Ultimatum,' opened to $69.3 million in 2007. Among recent Marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy's opening is nearly on par with 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier's' $95 million, and is noticeably higher than 'Thor: The Dark World's' $85.7 million. That's pretty remarkable considering the Guardians were unknown to most moviegoers a year ago, and have few obvious connections to the Avengers at the moment.

"'Guardians of the Galaxy' also opened above recent superhero sequels 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' Among 2014 releases, it only trails 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' ($100 million) and the previously-mentioned Captain America sequel."

Universal Pictures' James Brown biopic "Get on Up" (starring Chadwick Boseman as the Brown) debuted at a distant No. 3, with $14 million in ticket sales. The movie also stars Nelsan Ellis, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending Aug. 3, 2014:

2. "Lucy" — $18.3 million
