Marvel Studios' sci-fi flick "Guardians of the Galaxy" held on to the No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending Aug. 31, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on Aug. 31, "Guardians of the Galaxy" (starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, along with the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel) had $16.3 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending Aug. 31, 2014.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" also closed out the summer 2014 movie season as the No. 1 movie of the summer. According to Box Office Mojo, "Guardians of the Galaxy" has so far had $547.7 million in ticket sales worldwide: $274.6 million from the U.S. and Canada and $273.1 million from other countries.

Two other movies opened in wide release the weekend of Aug. 31, 2014:

Universal Pictures' horror flick "As Above/So Below" debuted at No. 3, with $8.3 million in ticket sales.

Relativity Media's spy thriller "The November Man" (starring Pierce Brosnan) debuted at No. 6, with $7.7 million in ticket sales.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending Aug. 31, 2014:

1. "Guardians of the Galaxy" — $16.3 million

2. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" — $11.75 million

3. "If I Stay" — $9.3 million

4. "As Above/So Below" — $8.3 million

5. "Let's Be Cops" — $8.2 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on Aug. 29, 2014:

  • "Cantinflas" — $2.62 million from 382 theaters
  • "Ghostbusters" (30th anniversary re-release) — $1.65 million from 784 theaters
  • "Life of Crime" — $99,500 from 33 theaters (Also premiered on VOD the same week)
  • "Starred Up" — $11,000 from two theaters (Also premiered on VOD the same week)
  • "The Notebook" (2014) — $3,200 from two theaters
